8 Tips for Maintaining Good Health
Keeping your body healthy should be one of your top priorities because it’s the foundation on which all other parts of your life are built. There are many things you can do to improve your health and keep it strong, and these eight tips will get you started in the right direction. Keep reading to learn how to maintain good health throughout your life and avoid health problems when they arise.
1) Sleep
According to a recent study, both adults and children who consistently get less than six hours of sleep each night are at a higher risk of developing health issues like obesity and depression. Experts recommend getting seven to nine hours of rest every night. Make sure you get enough sleep by planning ahead—but remember to give yourself some wiggle room. If you know you have an early morning, try switching your bedtime earlier instead of pushing yourself through late-night deadlines.
2) Hydrate
Making sure you have access to clean water is one of the most important things when it comes to maintaining good health. Without proper hydration, your immune system won’t be at full strength and you can put yourself at risk for a number of illnesses. Drink plenty of water throughout your day. Eight 8-ounce glasses is considered a safe daily goal, but it can be adjusted based on your activity level and needs.
3) Exercise
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that adults engage in 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week, plus muscle-strengthening activities at least twice a week. Taking time out to work out can be one of those tasks that gets pushed off because it requires you to leave your desk and go someplace else. But taking some kind of exercise break throughout your day is an important part of maintaining good health, not to mention helping to manage stress and improve your energy levels.
4) Meditate
Meditation can have a massive impact on your mental and physical well-being. It can also help promote emotional balance and stability, reduce stress levels, improve sleep patterns, increase feelings of self-worth and improve your overall health. Meditation has been known to benefit a variety of conditions including but not limited to chronic pain, insomnia, depression and anxiety.
5) Focus on your diet
In order to maintain a healthy diet, we have to focus on what we’re putting into our bodies. Fresh fruits and vegetables are always your best bet, but that doesn’t mean you can’t occasionally cheat. Organic meats are typically better choices, too. Everything in moderation! If you really want something sweet, try making your own homemade treats instead of purchasing candy bars at a gas station; it works every time!
6) Mindfulness
No one likes to think about death, but it’s important to remain aware of our finite time on Earth. Meditation and mindfulness are critical components of maintaining good health because they train your brain to be present in a way that reduces stress. According to a study conducted by researchers at Yale University, practicing mindfulness can reduce stress-related cortisol levels. Plus, meditation is linked with lower blood pressure and overall increased well-being.
7) Stress
It’s no secret that a little stress is good for you. It motivates you, inspires you, keeps you going. But when it gets out of control, or becomes too much to handle, it stops being so helpful and can actually cause a number of health problems. So what’s our solution? Sometimes, it’s as simple as taking a deep breath and realizing just how good we have it.
8) Support system
Surround yourself with supportive people who will cheer you on, and encourage you to achieve your goals. If a friend is always badgering you about how much weight you’ve gained since your last vacation together, it might be best to distance yourself from that person in order to maintain good health.
